The Origins of Yoga

T. Krishnamacharya was born in Muchukundapuram in India in 1888. He is said to have influenced the dramatic spread of yoga in modern times and is for many world wide, a legend. A.G Mohan (co-founder os the Svastha organisation) was a personal student of Sri T Krishnamacharya for 18 years from 1971 to 1989. The New Zealand  Svastha School of Yoga is founded on the Svastha organisation in Chennai, India which was started by A.G and his wife, Indra Mohan. Together Indra, A.G. Mohan teach Yoga Therapy.

Those graduating from the Svastha Teacher training program are entitled to register with the International Yoga Alliance at the RYT200 level. The training is designed to offer an understanding and appreciation of the psychology of yoga, a comprehensive knowledge of both the theory and practice of asana, pranayama and meditation. Students learn and are encouraged to make positive changes in their own lives while providing the same guidance to others. They need to demostrate the ability to teach, applying the principles of Svastha while ensuring the individual student is supported safely and confidently throughout their practice.

Teachers such as A.G Mohan and T.K.V Desikachar have maintaned the authenticity of Krishnamacharya's teachings. They teach that yoga is not only about asana but must carefully consider the student, accounting for health, age, gender and ability.

Reflexology
By definition, Reflexology is massage to specific points on the feet and hands but it is a therapy which goes far beyond the basics of massage. Reflexology is well documented as being helpful for a wide range of physical conditions but extends to the subtle body, the emotions and beyond, promoting feelings of well being. More and more people are opting for drug free alternatives to improve well being and are finding the desired results in therapies such as Reflexology. Given the chance the body has an amazing ability to heal itself with healthy lifesyle choices and the support of ancient pressure point techniques used in Reflexology.

The Origins of Reflexology
How it arrived in the west

Pressure point foot massage has been practiced for centureies. Hyroglifics more that 5000 years old depict the practice being used to aid well being and today it is still held in high regard across much of Asia. Doreen Bayly, a student of Eunice D. Ingham, introduced 'Reflexology' to the UK in the late 1960's, establishing the Bayly School of Reflexology. The National Health Service (NHS) in the UK acknowledge and promote the use of Reflexology in treating dis-ease and employ Reflexologists as part of the recovery process. The Late Princess of Wales was an avid supporter of Reflexology and had regular weekly treatments.

How it works
There are more than 7000 nerve endings in the feet. They reflect the entire body's systems. Stimulating the points relating to each of the systems with massage, helps encourage homeostasis in the body and mind, awakening the body's natural healing responses. Regular Reflexology treatments promote a general feeling of relaxation and improved well-being however the far reaching health benefits are not to be underestimated. Reflexology is not diagnostic, does not treat specific medical conditions and is not a replacement for specialised medical care. It is rather a therapeutic practice which compliments a well rounded, healthy lifestyle.
